What is Salesforce Marketing Cloud Next? How it differs from Marketing Cloud Engagement

Leer este artículo en español →

Salesforce Marketing Cloud Next is Salesforce's agentic marketing platform for the whole customer lifecycle. It is built natively on the Salesforce core platform, uses Data 360 as its data layer and comes with AI agents that help you plan, create, personalize and optimize campaigns. If you have been working with Marketing Cloud for years, the obvious question is how it relates to what you already use. This article covers where it comes from, how it differs from Marketing Cloud Engagement and whether you need to migrate.

Joaquín País, CEO of ShowerThinking, also explains it on video:

What is Salesforce Marketing Cloud Next?

Salesforce describes it as an agentic marketing platform for the whole customer lifecycle, built for both B2C and B2B marketing. Three things explain almost all of it:

  • It lives inside Salesforce. It runs on the same platform as Sales Cloud and Service Cloud, not next to it.
  • Its data sits in Data 360, the product formerly called Data Cloud. Every person has one unified profile.
  • It runs on AI agents, native to Agentforce, that prepare the audience, the content and the journey of a campaign for the team to review and approve.

Salesforce launched it in June 2025 as the first full-funnel agentic marketing solution that turns every channel into a two-way conversation.

Where it comes from: Marketing Cloud Engagement

To understand Marketing Cloud Next you have to start with Marketing Cloud Engagement. Engagement is the platform that came with ExactTarget, the company Salesforce bought in 2013, and for a long time it was what everybody simply called Marketing Cloud.

It is organized in studios and builders: Email Studio, Mobile Studio, Content Builder, Contact Builder and Automation Studio, with Journey Builder on top to orchestrate the journeys. Data lives in data extensions, tables of contacts and attributes that you have to import, sync and maintain.

It is a mature and very complete tool. But it has its own stack, connected to the CRM instead of living inside it, and a big part of every project goes into moving data between the two systems. Anyone who has set up Marketing Cloud Connect knows what we mean.

Marketing Cloud Next vs Marketing Cloud Engagement: the three differences

1. Platform and data

This is the difference that matters most. Marketing Cloud Next is not a separate system connected to Salesforce: it is built on the same platform as the other clouds, and its database is Data 360.

Data 360 brings together in one profile each person's data from Salesforce apps, from external sources such as a data warehouse and even from unstructured data. Marketing, service and the rest of the company look at the same profile. With Engagement you usually have two copies, one in the CRM and one in data extensions, and they drift apart over time. If you want a refresher on what Data 360 does under the hood, we covered it in What is Data Cloud?.

2. From predefined journeys to goal-based campaigns

The second difference is how a campaign gets built.

In Engagement you design the journey up front: the entry source, the decision splits, the wait steps and every branch by hand. When customer behavior changes, you go back to Journey Builder and redraw it.

In Marketing Cloud Next, journeys run on Flow, the same automation engine the rest of Salesforce uses, and the starting point is different. You give the agent a marketing plan, a brief and a goal. The agent proposes the audience, the content and the journey, and your team reviews and approves it. Once it is live, the campaign keeps working toward that goal: it shows more of what works and, when a person fits several campaigns at once, it decides which one makes sense for them, or whether it is better to send nothing.

3. Messages become conversations

The third difference is in the channel itself. In Engagement a message almost always goes one way: you send it and measure opens and clicks.

In Marketing Cloud Next a message can turn into a conversation. Someone replies to an SMS with a question, an AI agent answers using the context of their profile and, if a person is needed, hands the conversation over to a service agent in the same thread. Because marketing and service share a platform, that handover does not depend on an integration someone has to build and maintain.

Do you need to migrate from Marketing Cloud Engagement to Marketing Cloud Next?

No. And this is where a lot of the confusion comes from.

Salesforce still sells Marketing Cloud Engagement, and its official message is that Marketing Cloud Next adds agentic capabilities on top of what you already have, not instead of it. With the Engagement+ editions your existing journeys, content and data stay available, and data extensions can feed the new capabilities.

Both products also have MCP connectors, so an AI assistant like Claude can work with both at the same time. In practice, most companies will run Engagement and Next side by side for quite a while.

Salesforce has not published any end-of-life date for Marketing Cloud Engagement. If someone is rushing you because of that, ask them for the source.

Where to start with Marketing Cloud Next

If you are deciding how to get started, we would look at two things:

  1. The data. Marketing Cloud Next works as well as the unified profile underneath it. Identity resolution and consent in Data 360 come before any agent.
  2. A campaign that is not working. Pick a journey that keeps getting stuck: too many branches, too much manual work, people going down the wrong path. Rebuild it around a goal. It will teach you more than any migration plan.

The first point is the one that shapes everything else. An agent working with duplicate data or unclear consent just makes bad decisions faster.
